Camas Prairie · Fairfield, Idaho
Regenerative grass-fed Highland beef, hardy cattle, and an authentic ranch stay at the foot of Idaho's Soldier Mountains.
Raised where the prairie meets the mountains
SMH Ranch is a working Highland cattle ranch on Idaho's Camas Prairie. We believe good beef begins with capable cattle, attentive stockmanship, diverse forage, and care for the soil and water beneath every hoof.
Our work joins Western ranch heritage with practical stewardship—producing food, strengthening rural livelihoods, and leaving the land more capable for the next generation.

Founder · SMH Ranch
For nearly four decades, I wore the uniform of the United States Army believing my highest responsibility was to support and defend the Constitution. Retirement did not end that responsibility. It simply changed the ground on which I serve.
I founded Soldiers of the Soil from a simple belief: healthy communities begin with healthy land. Through stewardship we restore more than landscapes—we restore purpose, communities, and hope.
“My hope is that fifty years from now no one remembers my name—they remember that a small group chose to begin something that endured.”Learn about Soldiers of the Soil →
Original novel artworkAn upcoming novel by Dennis C. Stitt Jr.
A contemporary Western family saga about courage, loyalty, land, and the price of freedom.
Inspired by the working landscapes of Idaho, Stone of the Sawtooths explores fathers and sons, service and sacrifice, stewardship, inheritance, and the responsibility carried from one generation to the next.
“Some fight wars. Others fight for something worth coming home to.”

Developing on the Camas Prairie
Working Highlands to regenerate the land and produce healthy, nutrient-dense beef for people and place.
SMH Ranch is developing a producer cooperative designed to unite Highland cattle owners, working-land partners, finishing capacity, processing, marketing, and direct-to-consumer fulfillment. The cooperative is completing negotiations intended to assemble access to approximately 3,180 acres for the 2027 season on and around Idaho's Camas Prairie.
The planned finishing and custom-grazing program would allow participating producers to enroll eligible Highland steers while the cooperative coordinates grazing standards, processing, marketing, and shipment. Final member agreements will establish costs, responsibilities, animal qualifications, payment timing, and the substantial share of net beef-sale proceeds retained by contributing owners.
Use adaptive grazing, monitoring, and livestock management to pursue healthier soil, water function, forage, and habitat.
Pool finishing, processing, marketing, and fulfillment capacity that can be difficult for individual Highland producers to build alone.
Pursue nutrient density through forage diversity, animal health, careful finishing, and transparent testing rather than unsupported promises.
Help more Americans understand the breed's hardiness, grazing ability, maternal strengths, distinctive coat, and beef quality.
We are seeking prospective members interested in enrolling steers, contributing cattle or land, or helping develop processing and direct-market capacity.
